Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology

How does it work?

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is a cost-effective method of producing high-purity Nitrogen. All Oreco Nitrogen® generators are based on PSA technology.

An Oreco NitroGen® solution consists of two cylinders storing Carbon Molecular Sieves (CMS), which is used to produce nitrogen.

An external buffer tank stores the pure Nitrogen.

The PSA process starts as clean and dry compressed air enters the first cylinder (left).

The unwanted oxygen gas is adsorbed by the pellets at high pressure, but the Nitrogen molecules pass through. The resulting high-purity Nitrogen gas is stored in the buffer tank.

During this step of the cycle, the second cylinder (right) is cleaned.

Next, the pressure between the two cylinders is equalised.

When the pressure drops in the left cylinder and the pellets are saturated, the waste products (Oxygen) are blown out through the exhaust system.

The process is repeated from step 2 but this time in the right cylinder. Pressure builds up, followed by equalisation.

The process is repeated and a constant production of Nitrogen gas is established.

A complete installation requires compressor, refrigeration dryer, air buffer tank, PSA separation units and produced Nitrogen buffer tank. Optional supply includes high pressure compressors for high pressure applications and/or filling station.
